The Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest Project is entering a new phase involving the redevelopment of square Phillips and avenue Union. Located in the heart of downtown, the new square Phillips will be larger and greener, and it will play host to cultural events, which will improve the quality of life of its users.

These work operations will be aimed at updating century-old underground infrastructures and ensuring that the new square gives users more leisure space. The square will be expanded by 37 per cent, from about 2,300 metres to 3,100 metres.² It will feature three times the number of trees, a 50 per cent increase in the number of shrubs, plants and flowers, a water garden, distinctive street furniture offering a 20 per cent increase in seated spaces, along with new LED lighting and free WiFi.

The new “garden square” will enhance the existing heritage features while lending them a more contemporary look. The Édouard VII monument and the commemorative monument to the victims of the Blue Bird fire will be restored. Lastly, the sidewalks will be widened and on-street parking around the square will be eliminated to improve the pedestrian experience and allow adjoining businesses to add sidewalk terraces.
